Your funeral planning checklist
Take it one step at a time. Each step below is a small, manageable action. You don't have to do everything at once.
Notify immediate family
Reach out to close family members and those who need to know right away. You don't need to contact everyone at once — start with those who will help carry the load with you.
Choose a funeral home
Contact at least 2–3 funeral homes to compare. You have the right to ask for a price list over the phone. Don't feel pressured to decide immediately — most are understanding.
Obtain the death certificate
The funeral home will typically help with this, but you'll need multiple certified copies (10–15 is common). You'll need them for banks, insurance, and government agencies.
Arrange body disposition
Decide on burial or cremation. If your loved one left written wishes, those should guide you. If not, this is a family decision — there is no wrong answer.
Plan the memorial service
Decide on the type of service: graveside, funeral home chapel, place of worship, or a celebration of life. Think about what your loved one would have wanted, and what will bring comfort to those who grieve.
